Setting:
The hallway of the ward
The beginning of the novel where we are introduced by the chief and we meet the nurse for the first time.
Themes:
Control and Oppression
Perspective vs. Perspective
Living vs. Apathy
Motifs:
Machinery which alludes to C n' O
Quotes for Themes:
"Color so hot or so cold if she touches you with it you can't tell which"
"They can't tell so much about you if you got your eyes close"
"They don't bother (...) they think I'm deaf and dumb"
Literary Devices:
Repetition and Onomatopoeia:
Hum of black machinery, humming hate…. (control and oppression and also pers. Vs. pers.)
Repetition: helped
Language:
The chief is the narrator and the main speaker during the excerpt. His diction is simple and his syntax is basic. This is mainly to express the actions around him, which eventually lets the action happen really fast.
Second paragraph related to machinery.
Tone: gloomy, tense
Most of the page is narrative, which helps to set the state of the ward before McMurphy.
Synechdoches and Paradoxes:
colour so hot or so cold if she touches you with it you can't tell which
Nurse and the ward represent the repressive society that is the US during the time.
Characters:
The Chief: main narrator, we see the story through his perspective.
Nurse: the main antagonist, portrayed as a being more powerful/evil than she seems to the eye. Again perspective vs. perspective and also helps to back up her control (control vs. oppression)
black boys: secondary characters, they don't really help the action.
